What Is the Financial Threshold for Being Super Rich?

An IMGW News Report

The landscape of wealth is evolving rapidly, necessitating a reassessment of what it means to be super-rich or ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW). Industry professionals present varying thresholds for UHNW status: some law firms cite $10 million, wealth managers suggest $30 million, while exclusive private clubs set the bar as high as $100 million.

In a recent article by the Financial Times, Dominic Volek, group head of private clients at Henley & Partners, highlights a significant surge in wealth creation, particularly within the tech sector. “The diversification into asset classes like cryptocurrencies and NFTs has created UHNW individuals almost instantaneously,” he remarks. Data from Capgemini illustrates this trend, revealing that the number of individuals with over $30 million surged from 157,000 in 2016 to 220,000 in 2022.

Wealth management experts contend that the $30 million benchmark has lost its exclusivity. Today, while $30 million may secure a luxurious lifestyle, it is increasingly regarded as merely the starting point. This shift is reflective of broader trends in inflation and escalating costs of luxury assets. For instance, a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold for $57.3 million in 2016 and reached $85 million in 2022. Furthermore, entry-level prices in luxury property markets, such as London’s Grosvenor Square, now hover around £20 million.

The conclusion is clear: as wealth dynamics shift, the definition of the super-rich is on the rise, fundamentally reshaping expectations and opportunities in the realm of the ultra-wealthy.
