An IMGlobalWealth.com News Report
Sotheby’s latest ‘Important Watches’ sale in Hong Kong has delivered a powerful signal of renewed confidence in the global horology market, with total sales reaching approximately HK$414.2 million (US$52.9 million).
Held on 24 April 2026 as part of the house’s broader Hong Kong luxury sales calendar, the auction drew strong international participation and underscored the continued appeal of rare, design-led timepieces among both seasoned collectors and a younger generation entering the market.
One of the defining themes of the sale was the exceptional performance of curated collections, most notably The Shapes of Cartier.
This landmark grouping, widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive assemblies of vintage Cartier watches ever offered, achieved outstanding results, with reports indicating full sell-through and values far exceeding pre-sale estimates.
Individual lots also reflected a broader shift in collector preferences. Rather than focusing solely on traditional sports models, bidders demonstrated increasing appetite for distinctive designs, historical provenance, and artistic expression.
This trend was highlighted by the strong demand for Cartier’s unconventional forms, including rare ‘“’Crash’ models, which continue to command premium prices and set new benchmarks in the auction market.
Across the catalogue, the sale featured a diverse mix of vintage, neo-vintage, and contemporary pieces from leading maisons such as Patek Philippe, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and independent watchmakers.
The breadth of offerings reinforced Hong Kong’s position as a global hub for watch collecting, where East-meets-West demand dynamics continue to shape pricing and trends.
The results also point to a structural evolution in the market. Sotheby’s notes that a growing proportion of buyers are under 40, reflecting a generational shift that is influencing taste, with design innovation and rarity increasingly outweighing traditional notions of investment value.
Taken together, the April auction confirms that high-end watch collecting remains resilient, with record-breaking sales and strong absorption rates signalling sustained momentum at the top end of the luxury market.
