Why the Global Elite are Stashing Gold in Singapore’s Vaults

An IMGW News Report

As economic fragility and geopolitical strife rattle markets worldwide, the ultra-wealthy are making a strategic shift – not into equities or cryptocurrencies, but into tangible gold bars. Increasingly, those bars are landing in Singapore.

A short drive from the airport sits a fortress-like six-storey vault facility – clad in black onyx and ringed with security. Known as The Reserve, it has seen an 88% year-on-year rise in storage requests for gold and silver, alongside a 200% surge in bullion bar sales during the first quarter of 2025.

“Singapore’s political stability, robust legal framework, and role as a global transit hub make it particularly appealing”

The shift is being driven by a growing sense of unease. According to an Asia-based precious metals dealer, “High-net-worth individuals are reassessing their exposure to counterparty risk and looking for safe jurisdictions where they can retain direct control of physical assets.”

Gold, now trading near historic highs at around $3,346 per ounce, is once again burnishing its appeal as a haven asset. Analysts expect further climbs should geopolitical or financial instability deepen, with forecasts placing gold as high as $5,000 per ounce within the year.

For many, the appeal lies in bypassing traditional intermediaries. “After the collapse of several financial institutions in recent years, investors are increasingly seeking ways to avoid entanglement in banking failures,” noted a European bullion strategist.

Allocated, securely vaulted metal offers insulation from such shocks – unlike pooled or paper gold, which may remain exposed in times of crisis.

Singapore’s political stability, robust legal framework, and role as a global transit hub make it particularly appealing. “Clients from volatile regions – especially parts of the Middle East and North Africa – are increasingly moving their holdings to Singapore,” explained a Gulf-based wealth adviser. “It offers both discretion and ease of access.”

In an era of declining trust in fiat currencies and financial institutions, gold is regaining its luster among the world’s elite – and Singapore is fast becoming its vault of choice.
