Facebook’s founder: ‘Migration Makes Us All Richer‘
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has ascended to become the world’s second-richest individual, surpassing Jeff Bezos, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. As of Thursday, Zuckerberg’s net worth reached an impressive £206.2 billion, eclipsing Bezos’s £205.1 billion. Only Tesla’s Elon Musk remains ahead, with a lead of approximately £50 billion.
Zuckerberg’s remarkable rise in wealth can be attributed to his 13% stake in Meta, which has experienced significant growth this year. The tech mogul’s fortune has increased by a staggering £78 billion in 2024 alone, marking the largest gain among the 500 wealthiest individuals tracked by the Bloomberg Index. Meta’s stock surged to a record high of £582.77 on Thursday, representing a substantial 68% increase since January, when shares were valued at £346.29.
“Zuckerberg’s ascension highlights not only his personal success but also the remarkable recovery of Meta as a leading player in the tech industry,” noted an analyst at Bloomberg. “This year has been transformative for the company, showing resilience and adaptability in a rapidly changing market.”
“None of this could have happened without a welcoming immigration policy, a great education system, and the world’s leading scientific community”
The surge in Zuckerberg’s net worth reflects a broader investor enthusiasm for Meta, particularly as the company continues to report quarterly earnings that exceed analyst expectations. In July, Meta announced second-quarter sales of £39.07 billion, a 22% year-on-year increase, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of revenue growth exceeding 20%. Analysts attribute this robust performance, in part, to the company’s substantial investments in artificial intelligence, which have bolstered its online advertising platform.
“We’ve seen a significant turnaround in Meta’s advertising business,” said a senior market analyst. “Their strategic focus on AI technologies has really paid off, allowing them to regain ground lost after the Apple privacy changes.”
Meta’s advertising business faced challenges following Apple’s privacy updates in 2021, which restricted user tracking capabilities. However, after a strategic cost-cutting initiative initiated by Zuckerberg that resulted in the reduction of approximately 21,000 jobs, investor confidence has been restored. This restructuring coincided with a resurgence in the online advertising market, partly fuelled by increased spending from Chinese retailers like Temu and Shein.
“Investors have responded positively to Zuckerberg’s decisive actions. By streamlining operations, Meta is now better positioned to capitalise on emerging trends,” commented an investment strategist.
Zuckerberg’s commitment to innovation remains evident as Meta continues to invest in virtual and augmented reality technologies, essential for realising the ambitious vision of the metaverse. Recent product launches, such as the Orion AR glasses, have been positively received, indicating a promising future for the company’s technological endeavours.
A Champion for Migration Reform
In addition to his business success, Zuckerberg has publicly championed immigration reform in the United States. In a recent Op-Ed (published by the International Organization for Migration), he emphasised the importance of welcoming immigration policies in fostering innovation and prosperity. “None of this could have happened without a welcoming immigration policy, a great education system, and the world’s leading scientific community,” he wrote, reflecting a personal commitment to societal progress through education and research.
Zuckerberg’s advocacy extends beyond rhetoric. He has founded initiatives like FWD.us, aimed at reforming U.S. immigration policies to enable talented individuals to contribute fully to the economy. His vision underscores a pragmatic approach, driven by the potential of migrants to enrich America’s future
