Julius Baer has nominated Noel Quinn, former Chief Executive of HSBC Holdings, as its next chairman, marking a significant hire for the Swiss private bank.

The bank’s board will put forward Quinn, 63, for election at its annual general meeting in April, according to a statement released on Friday. His appointment would bring extensive experience in global banking at a time when Julius Baer is navigating shifting market dynamics and heightened regulatory scrutiny.
Quinn, who stepped down from HSBC last year, spent nearly four decades at the lender, rising to CEO in 2020. His tenure was defined by sweeping cost-cutting measures, a pivot towards Asia, and an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. His leadership at Julius Baer is expected to reinforce the bank’s position amid intensifying competition in wealth management.
HSBC, one of the world’s largest financial institutions, manages over $3 trillion in assets and operates in more than 60 countries. By contrast, Julius Baer, a specialist in wealth management, oversees around $450 billion in assets, focusing on high-net-worth clients across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
The nomination underscores Julius Baer’s ambitions to bolster its governance and strategic direction. If approved, Quinn will succeed Romeo Lacher, who has chaired the bank since 2018.
