The influential Argentinian leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, Pope Francis, has once again condemned President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, particularly the administration’s plan for mass deportations. In a letter addressed to US bishops, the pontiff warned that such actions would “damage the dignity of many men and women” and push them into ‘a state of particular vulnerability and defenselessness.’ While acknowledging the right of nations to protect their borders, the Pope emphasised that such measures should not come at the expense of human dignity.
The pontiff’s statements come in the wake of Trump’s announcement that all of Gaza’s inhabitants, over 2 million, are to be removed and offered “free homes” in neighbouring Arab states. This controversial proposal has sparked global outrage, with critics warning of the severe humanitarian consequences of forcibly displacing millions of people. In his letter, Pope Francis reiterated his belief in the importance of compassion and the right of individuals to seek refuge, emphasising that policies driven by force, rather than respect for human dignity, are doomed to fail.
This is not the first time Pope Francis has clashed with Trump over immigration. In 2016, the pontiff famously declared that those building walls to exclude migrants “were not Christians.” The latest rebuke coincides with an intensification of Trump’s rhetoric on immigration, including his recent pledge to expel millions of undocumented migrants. This commitment was central to his 2024 election campaign, where he vowed to prioritise the mass deportation of migrants, a policy that has sparked significant controversy.
Trump Moves Electoral Rhetoric into Action
The Pope’s comments also serve as a direct warning against the US president’s pledge to deport millions of undocumented migrants from the USA. Trump’s victory has reignited his ambitious campaign promise to launch the largest mass deportation programme in US history, targeting the over 11 million undocumented migrants currently residing in the country. With control of Congress and a seemingly stronger mandate, Trump may now be in a position to implement these measures, unlike in his first term, when legal challenges hindered his plans.
This plan, which includes deploying military personnel and federalising state National Guard units, is expected to face fierce legal opposition, particularly from Democratic leaders and state governors who oppose it. Key figures such as Tom Homan and Stephen Miller, both known for their controversial immigration policies, have been reinstated to lead the campaign. Critics argue that Trump’s approach overlooks the complexities of deporting millions of long-term residents who contribute to the workforce and have US citizen family members.
The economic cost of such an operation is estimated to exceed $960 billion over 10 years, placing significant strain on national resources and devastating immigrant communities. The legal and humanitarian fallout is also a concern, as critics warn that US citizens and lawful immigrants could be mistakenly detained. This move sets a dangerous precedent, potentially encouraging other nations to adopt similar exclusionary policies at a time when global cooperation is critical.
Pope Francis, referencing biblical narratives of migration, reiterated that individuals have the right to seek refuge, cautioning against associating illegal immigration with criminality. He further warned that “what is built on the basis of force, and not on the truth about the equal dignity of every human being, begins badly and will end badly.”
In response to recent comments by US Vice President JD Vance, the Pope invoked the parable of the Good Samaritan, underscoring the importance of extending compassion beyond one’s own community. David Gibson, Director of the Centre for Religion and Culture at Fordham University, noted that the pope’s intervention was aimed at debunking Vance’s “absurd theological claim” about Christian love, reaffirming the Church’s stance on inclusivity and the protection of migrants.
