As part of its recent Statement of Changes, the United Kingdom (UK) has unveiled significant updates to its immigration and visa policies, set to take effect between September 2024 and February 2025. These changes include the expansion of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, new visa requirements for Jordanian nationals, and the introduction of specific visa routes for diplomatic and VIP delegates. Here’s a closer look at the key aspects of these updates.
Expansion of the ETA Scheme
The UK will extend its ETA scheme to encompass additional European and non-European nationalities over the next two years. Beginning in November 2024, more non-European nationals will be required to apply for an ETA before visiting the UK. By January 2025, this will be mandatory for travel. Similarly, from March 2025, eligible European nationals will be able to apply for an ETA, and it will be a requirement from April 2025.
The ETA expansion follows a phased approach and aims to enhance border security and track visitor information more effectively. However, it introduces additional planning and financial costs for travelers, with applications potentially taking up to three days to process. There is also no appeal mechanism for rejected applications, adding to the complexity of the process.
Revoking Visa-Exempt Status for Jordanian Nationals
A key change that has taken immediate effect is the revocation of visa-exempt status for Jordanian nationals. From September 10, 2024, Jordanian citizens are required to obtain a visa to enter, stay, or transit through the UK. Jordanian nationals who booked their travel before the new rules were announced will have a short window, until October 8, 2024, to enter the UK under the previous conditions.
This change increases administrative and monetary burdens for Jordanian travelers, particularly impacting business mobility. Employers sending Jordanian employees to the UK will now need to account for these new visa requirements in their plans.
New Diplomatic and VIP Delegate Visas
In addition to these changes, the UK has introduced two new visa categories. The Diplomatic Visa Arrangement caters to foreign diplomats, ensuring smoother travel for those conducting official state business. Furthermore, a new VIP Delegate Visa route is designed to accommodate members of state leaders’ and ministers’ entourages, streamlining entry for important international visitors.

These updates reflect the UK’s broader digitalisation and security efforts, with the ETA system playing a central role in the transformation of its immigration framework.
