The US Passport Gets a Digital Makeover

An IMGlobalWealth.News Report

America is preparing to overhaul both its passport and the way citizens obtain one, combining a more elaborate physical document with a digital application system intended to eliminate much of the paperwork surrounding international travel.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled the plans on September 29 during the launch of America.gov, the Trump administration’s new digital gateway for federal services. From December, Americans seeking their first passport are expected to be able to complete the process online, including submitting personal details, providing a photograph and making payment. The administration says its goal is for the vast majority of Americans to be able to apply for a passport or passport card through the platform by the end of 2027.

“For a document historically associated with stamps, queues and paperwork, America’s passport is becoming decidedly more digital”

The passport itself is also heading for a redesign. From 2028, the State Department plans to introduce “Flight of the Eagle”, retaining the familiar blue cover but giving greater prominence to gold detailing and the American eagle. The document is expected to feature new historical imagery and more elaborate presentation packaging.

The changes come as passport demand reaches record levels. The State Department issued 27.35m passport books and cards in fiscal 2025, up 11.6% from 2024. Some 183.17m valid American passports and passport cards were in circulation, compared with fewer than 30m three decades earlier.

In that sense, the latest overhaul is another stage in a long technological evolution. Federal control over passport issuance was consolidated by legislation in 1856. Passports became generally required for Americans leaving the country during the national emergency surrounding the Second World War.

Technology increasingly reshaped the document thereafter. The United States began issuing electronic passports containing contactless chips to the public in 2006. A new generation introduced in 2021 added a polycarbonate data page, laser engraving and additional anti-counterfeiting features. In September 2024, online passport renewal became fully available nationwide, laying some of the groundwork for today’s broader digital push.

For a document historically associated with stamps, queues and paperwork, America’s passport is becoming decidedly more digital.
