Spain has carried out its threat to retaliate against Italy, announcing temporary border controls on passengers arriving from the country as a migration dispute between the two Schengen partners intensifies.
From midnight on Saturday, August 8th, Spanish authorities will conduct passport, nationality and visa checks on travellers arriving by air or sea from Italy.
The controls are scheduled to remain in place until September 7th and will apply to Italian citizens as well as other nationalities travelling from Italian territory.
The move follows Italy’s refusal to withdraw restrictions introduced on arrivals from Spain after the mass movement of migrants from Morocco into Ceuta on July 30th. Rome said it would maintain its controls until at least August 15th and would not accept “ultimatums or impositions” concerning national security and border management.
As IMGW.news reported on August 7th, Madrid had described Italy’s measures as unjustified, discriminatory and contrary to European interests, warning that it would respond proportionately unless Rome reversed course. That warning has now become policy.
The quarrel emerged from a humanitarian emergency that has rapidly acquired European consequences. Earlier IMGW.news coverage reported that at least 18 people had died during attempts to enter Ceuta, including migrants believed to have drowned while swimming around coastal barriers or been caught in crowds at the frontier.
What began as a crisis at one of the European Union’s land borders with Africa has therefore travelled to the heart of passport-free Europe.
Spain and Italy are no longer merely disputing responsibility for migration. They are imposing reciprocal controls on one another, exposing how quickly pressure at Schengen’s external frontier can erode trust within it.
