From Gold to Bitcoin: BlackRock’s Game-Changing ETF Success

A IMGW News Report

BlackRock Inc.’s iShares division manages over 1,400 exchange-traded funds (ETFs) globally, but none have matched the performance of its latest innovation: the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT).

Launched in early 2024, IBIT broke industry records, amassing over $50 billion in assets within just 11 months. It is the fastest-growing ETF in history, dwarfing the combined assets of more than 50 Europe-focused ETFs that have been active for decades, as reported by Bloomberg and other mainstream media. Nate Geraci of The ETF Store hailed IBIT’s debut as “the greatest launch in ETF history.”

James Seyffart of Bloomberg Intelligence described IBIT’s rise as unprecedented, surpassing milestones faster than any ETF in any asset class. With an expense ratio of 0.25%, IBIT is projected to generate around $112 million annually.

Beyond its staggering growth, IBIT marked a pivotal moment for Bitcoin. BlackRock’s endorsement, as the world’s largest asset manager with over $11 trillion under its wing, propelled Bitcoin’s price past $100,000 for the first time. This endorsement encouraged institutional and retail investors alike to embrace the cryptocurrency.

The Journey to IBIT

The road to a spot-Bitcoin ETF in the US was arduous. Efforts began in 2013 with the Winklevoss twins, whose application was rejected by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Subsequent attempts faced similar fates until Grayscale Investments won a landmark court case in 2023, overturning the SEC’s rejection of its Bitcoin trust-to-ETF conversion.

BlackRock’s entry into the arena signalled a turning point. CEO Larry Fink, once critical of Bitcoin, rebranded it as ‘digital gold.’ Known for its expertise in ETF filings, BlackRock’s approval seemed inevitable. By January 2024, it, along with competitors like Fidelity and Grayscale, launched the first cohort of US spot-Bitcoin ETFs. Together, these funds now manage $107 billion.

Dominating the Market

IBIT has eclipsed BlackRock’s gold ETF and may soon overtake SPDR Gold Shares, the largest gold fund. It drives more than 50% of daily trading volume among Bitcoin ETFs and dominates ETF options trading, averaging $1.7 billion in daily volume since November.

While Vanguard remains cautious about crypto, BlackRock’s forward-thinking approach positions it as a leader in the evolving investment landscape.
