The United Arab Emirates has extended the validity of Emirati passports to ten years for citizens aged 21 and over, effective from 8 July 2024. How will this effect UAE citizens?
This initiative by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP) doubles the previous validity period of five years. For those under 21, passport validity remains unchanged at five years.
Ranked as the most powerful passport in the Arab region, the Emirati passport holds the 11th position in the Henley Passport Index 2024.
This new ten-year passport service aims to reduce the frequency of renewals, thereby aiding governmental efforts to streamline bureaucratic processes and save citizens time. The application procedure for the ten-year passports remains consistent with current protocols and can be initiated either upon the expiration of the existing passport or when all pages are used.
UAE citizens have several convenient options for renewing their passports. Domestically, applications can be processed at local passport offices operated by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. In emergencies, dedicated passport offices at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah airports are open 24/7. For those residing abroad, the service is available through UAE embassies and consulates.
