An IMGlobalWealth.com News Report
Elon Musk has entered unprecedented territory, becoming the first individual in modern history to amass a personal fortune exceeding $700bn, following a Delaware Supreme Court ruling that reinstated his 2018 Tesla stock-option package.
According to Forbes’ real-time billionaires index, Musk’s net worth climbed to an estimated $749bn after the court restored stock options now valued at roughly $139bn. The ruling overturns a 2024 lower-court decision that had struck down the package on governance grounds, citing conflicts of interest and insufficient shareholder disclosure.
In reversing that judgment, Delaware’s highest court concluded that rescinding the options left Musk “uncompensated for his time and efforts over a period of six years”, deeming the earlier ruling improper and inequitable.
The decision reinstates what remains one of the largest executive compensation awards ever granted.
Musk has not issued a formal statement but responded briefly on his social media platform X, saying he felt “vindicated”.
If exercised in full, the restored options would raise Musk’s stake in Tesla from approximately 12.4% to 18.1% of an expanded share base, further strengthening his influence over the electric-vehicle manufacturer.
He is now estimated to be around $500bn wealthier than the world’s second-richest individual, Google co-founder Larry Page.
The ruling also arrives at a time when Tesla shareholders have approved an even more ambitious long-term incentive framework.
Under that plan, Musk could ultimately receive up to $1trn in additional equity over the next decade, provided he meets demanding operational and financial milestones, including mass vehicle and robotics production, widespread adoption of self-driving technology, substantial profit growth, and lifting Tesla’s market capitalisation to $8.5trn. Tesla is currently valued at around $1.51trn.
While Musk’s fortune now dwarfs that of any contemporary billionaire, it remains distinct from the wealth of history’s true titans.
As IMGlobalWealth.com explored in its recent feature Richer Than Musk: History’s True Titans of Wealth, figures such as Mansa Musa, Augustus Caesar and Genghis Khan commanded resources equivalent to entire empires, their wealth measured less in balance sheets than in control over land, labour and trade.
What sets Musk apart is not merely scale, but context. He is the first individual to reach such heights through market-driven capitalism rather than conquest or crown, marking a defining moment in the evolution of global wealth.
