From this month, the United Kingdom has begun issuing a redesigned passport, introducing a new cover, refreshed internal imagery and a strengthened set of security features.

New features include layered holographic elements, translucent sections that must align precisely, complex background patterns and details that are visible only under ultraviolet light.
These additions are designed to assist border officials in verifying authenticity quickly and detecting tampering, even in challenging conditions.
For travellers, the practical implications are limited. Passports issued under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II remain valid until their printed expiry date, and there is no requirement to replace them early.
Authorities nonetheless advise travellers to check validity well ahead of planned journeys, particularly as many destinations require several months of remaining validity on entry.
