An IMGW News Report
Johannesburg, the financial capital of South Africa, stands as the wealthiest city on the continent, home to some 12,000 millionaires, 25 centi-millionaires (with assets exceeding €100 million), and two billionaires, according to the Henley & Partners Africa Wealth Report*.
Long established as the economic engine of South Africa, Johannesburg hosts the continent’s largest stock exchange, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), and serves as the headquarters for many of the country’s major banks and corporations. Its robust financial services sector continues to attract investors, cementing its status as a gateway for businesses seeking to expand into Africa.

The city’s affluence is concentrated in Sandton, often referred to as “the richest square mile in Africa.” This upmarket district is home to luxury residences, five-star hotels, and private business clubs where Africa’s corporate elite convene.
Johannesburg’s transformation into a commercial powerhouse dates back to the discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand hills in the 1880s, which triggered a rush of wealth and development. Today, mining remains significant, with Mponeng, the world’s deepest gold mine, lying just outside the city, reaching depths of 3.84km and holding over 46 million ounces of gold.

Yet Johannesburg’s economy is no longer defined by mining alone. The city has witnessed rapid expansion in finance, technology, and real estate, with global firms setting up regional headquarters to capitalise on its skilled workforce and relatively business-friendly environment. Its status as Africa’s busiest transport hub, anchored by OR Tambo International Airport, further reinforces its role in the continent’s economic landscape.
However, despite its prosperity, Johannesburg grapples with stark inequalities. High crime rates, a housing crisis, and infrastructure challenges persist, though urban renewal initiatives seek to address these issues. Nonetheless, its economic strength remains pivotal to South Africa’s broader growth trajectory, ensuring its continued prominence as the continent’s premier business hub.
