From Nauru to Naoero: A Small State Reclaims its Name and its Future

An IMGlobalWealth.News Report

The Pacific republic’s return to its indigenous name strengthens national identity while supporting a broader strategy centred on climate resilience, disciplined investment and economic renewal.

The Pacific island nation known internationally as Nauru has officially reclaimed its traditional name, becoming the Republic of Naoero.

The change was formally communicated to the United Nations on 26 June 2026 and is now being adopted by governments and international institutions. President David Adeang described the decision as one rooted in identity, heritage and the preservation of the country’s ancestral legacy.

Naoero is not an invented national brand. It is the country’s indigenous name, spoken within the community and already represented on its coat of arms. The former international designation developed largely because foreign visitors found the traditional pronunciation difficult.

“For one of the world’s smallest states, the restoration carries considerable soft-power value”

For one of the world’s smallest states, the restoration carries considerable soft-power value. It gives Naoero greater ownership over how it is presented internationally and creates a distinctive national identity around which its diplomacy, climate advocacy and investment strategy can be organised.

The change also arrives during a period of modest but tangible economic progress. The International Monetary Fund estimated growth of 2.1 per cent during the 2025 financial year, while the Asian Development Bank expects growth of 2.5 per cent in both 2026 and 2027.

The government’s 2026-27 budget projects revenue of A$359.2 million against managed expenditure of A$359 million. Nevertheless, the economy remains highly exposed to imports, external support and environmental shocks.

Central to the country’s strategy is the Economic and Climate Resilience Citizenship Programme, launched at COP29. Rather than pursuing applicant volume alone, the programme emphasises rigorously screened contributors, government and international due-diligence checks, interviews and strict eligibility assessments.

Contributions are made to the national Treasury Fund and are intended to support climate adaptation, infrastructure and economic diversification.

“The restoration of Naoero is therefore more than a linguistic correction”

As IMGW News previously explored in Reaching for Higher Ground: Nauru’s Bold Plan to Secure Its Future, this capital is intended partly to support the Higher Ground Initiative. The programme seeks to rehabilitate the island’s phosphate-damaged interior, relocate vulnerable communities and infrastructure, and develop sustainable housing, renewable energy, water security and local food production. A pilot phase has already commenced.

Separately, the Intergenerational Trust Fund, established in 2015, is designed to preserve national wealth for future generations. Naoero’s current development targets provide for contributions equivalent to 10.1 per cent of adjusted government revenue, with the fund expected to enter withdrawal status in 2033. It should not be confused with the Treasury Fund receiving citizenship-programme contributions.

IMGW News has also examined the programme’s investment and mobility proposition in Nauru’s Citizenship Programme is Making Waves and the World is Watching.

The restoration of Naoero is therefore more than a linguistic correction. It is a declaration that this small island state intends to define itself, attract reputable international capital and turn its environmental vulnerability into a platform for innovation and global influence.
